THE BLOG
Whoever thought up the word “networking” should give me a call, because I have some questions for them. Like, “Why?” And, “Really?”
I can't think of anything less inspiring or motivating than the word “networking.”
I know from decades of coaching that when most people hear “networking,” what they really hear is, “forced small talk followed by awkward shop talk.”
That's not exactly my idea of a good time.
When seen in this light, networking can bring up feelings of dread, fear, inadequacy, and even total avoidance.
So, let's rebrand networking.
No longer are we dragging into an event, forcing ourselves into small talk and dodging questions about ourselves.
We're no longer networking.
We're connecting!
Connection is where magic happens.
When we connect to ourselves, to each other, to our passions and our work, our world opens up in amazing ways.
Connecting is inviting. It's inspiring. It's fun.
That's all networking should be!
Once you feel a genuine connection with someone, talking about yourself and what you do won't be such a dreaded conversation. You'll feel empowered to share your story.
“But, Amanda, what if my work is really boring and no one will care about it?”
I've got news for you. Just like we rebranded networking, we can also rebrand how you think about your work and your story!
With the right mindset and the right phrasing, EVERYTHING can be interesting.
