Slides that don't suck

When I see a video like this, two words come to mind.

 

More, please.

 

With utter seriousness - funny animal videos are so good for my mental health.

 

(I like to imagine that they have their own videos of humans doing funny things, too.)

I wrote down some of my ideas on how to make your work slides more like play slides in an article for Expert Profile Magazine. And, just for you, I've copied them below!

Slides - Friend or Foe 

 

Picture this. You’re eight years old. I tell you, “There are lots of slides.” This is exciting! Your mind conjures a lush playground with colorful slides of different heights.

 

Your heartbeat happily speeds up as you picture climbing to the tippy top of one. You feel the rush of letting go as you let gravity do its job. Wheee! You land, ready to spring into action, ready for more.

 

Now picture this. You’re 38. I tell you, “There are lots of slides.”

 

Let me guess. You’re envisioning a drab conference room with a screen displaying a boring slide covered in text. You feel despair as you visualize the speaker reading the slide out loud – word for word. 

 

The next slide appears, it’s all long sentences. Just 72 slides to go, no images in sight.

 

What if slides in the office could feel more like….slides on the playground? What if you could create a slide deck that generates anticipation, momentum, and delight?

 

Here are 5 tips to help you!

 

🛝1. Create a map. Slides are for your audience; they’re not just your notes. Outline the intellectual and emotional journey you’ll take your audience on, then create your slides.

 

🛝2. Include delight. What analogy would help explain the problem you’re solving? Add an interesting image that represents this analogy.

 

🛝3. Build suspense. If you have 5 points on a slide, reveal one at a time. Your audience will listen to you instead of reading ahead.

 

🛝4. Create momentum. Once you’ve created your slides, confirm that each one moves your story along. If a slide brings your audience on a tangent, cut it.

 

🛝5. Have a clear call to action. Let your audience know how they can spring into action.
