What Does Your Body Language Say About You?

What does your body language say about you?

 

When your colleagues, clients, or students tune into hear what you have to say, how do they feel?

 

Does your body language tell them that they're in good hands? 

 

Or are you unconsciously signaling that you are not fully sold on what you're talking about? 

 

Are you slouching? Is your posture rigid? What are you doing with your hands? Are you fidgeting without noticing? Are you too still? Are you moving too much?

Yep, I get it. Body language can be a minefield with WAY too much advice out there.

 

But it's really important to be aware of what your body is communicating.

 

I recently had my tennis teacher film me so I could see what was happening with my serve.

 

Not only did I see my toss needed to go higher, I also saw what was happening with my posture. 😕

 

I was awkwardly hunched.

 

Very good to know (though difficult to watch!).

 

(Note to self - shoulders back when on the tennis court. And everywhere else!)

 

And then, last weekend on a totally different court, I played some games with Sabrina, my tennis friend. She gave me the scoop on her very first tournament.

 

(I want to play in tournaments this year, so I was hanging on her every word.)

 

As I leaned in (but with my shoulders back), she described a fellow player who walked on the court with so much physical confidence (and a fab outfit), that my friend was convinced this woman would be very hard to beat.

 

That stylish woman. owned. that. space.

 

That's how I want to enter my first tournament. With a confident stride, keeping my pre-game/totally new experience jitters in stride.

 

So, I'm practicing my serve most days. And consciously serving, walking, and running with my shoulders back.

 

I want to be ready. I am going to to be the newbie who walks on the court with confidence.

 

Your body language is powerful. People often see it before you speak.
